The 2018 awards season started in a bleak place, coming off of a fall that rattled celebrities and the world with allegations of sexual harassment and assault at the hands of powerful Hollywood men. But the protest led by the Time’s Up organization at the Golden Globes, which saw attendees donning black gowns and tuxes in solidarity, has given way to what is hopefully a more optimistic outlook.
Or, at least, the ensembles at Sunday’s Academy Awards hinted at brighter things to come.
There was no organized protest or call for uniform dressing, but at least a dozen leading ladies and a handful of men chose to wear shades of white, including radiant blushes and creams, suggesting new beginnings.
One of the first to hit the red carpet, Williams sparkled in a buff Armani Privé gown that made it known she’s embraced the role of movie star.
The Jane the Virgin star made waves when she hit the carpet in this Zuhair Murad gown.
There’s something hopeful about Robbie’s etherial Chanel, which gave the actress an angelic vibe.
The same goes for Dern in a simple but stunning Calvin Klein frock.
The Mudbound director made a statement in white tails over her black tux.
The Call Me By Your Name star continued his stellar awards season in a striking white tux.
There were also plenty of pops of color that gave the carpet a cheery feel.
Kidman has been a bright spot over the last year in more ways than one. Her always-spectacular wardrobe has remained on point, down to the smart bow on this Armani Privé gown.
