As of Sunday night, the Best Picture of the past year could be a love story involving a fish-man, a revenge comedy centered on the rape and murder of a teen girl, or a horror-comedy about body-snatching Caucasian people.

Yes, folks, the 2018 Oscars, the biggest night in cinema, is here. The Oscars are a night when we recognize the best performances and movies of the past year on the silver screen. And part of what makes this year’s Oscar race so intriguing is that there’s been no clear frontrunner for Best Picture. Headed into the night, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water has the most nominations with 13. But that movie along with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Dunkirk have all taken home hardware during awards season, and there are whispers that Jordan Peele’s Get Out might pull off an upset.

It could also be a night of records, milestones, and history being made. Mudbound writer and director Dee Rees is the second black woman screenwriter to be nominated for screenwriting, and the film’s cinematographer, Rachel Morrison, is the first woman to be nominated in the Best Cinematography category. Peele is the first black filmmaker ever nominated for directing, writing, and producing in the same year, and Lady Bird’s Greta Gerwig is only the fifth woman to be nominated for Best Director.
